I must admit, living abroad made me more patriotic. My personality, my perception of the world have changed enormously, since i have started to live abroad four years ago. For example i started to appreciate the traditional foods of my country,I started wear the traditional clothing of my own country, I started to use my country's brands, I would say i turned into a conscious, patriot consumer! My perception of my country changed as well started to appreciate the people of my country, even appreciated more my parents and relatives. Don't get me wrong it is not racism, it is the values that have been neglecting in the past due to my own and (thank you very much!) past ignorance. So this is how things really look like when i am abroad.
Meanwhile, things are different when you get back, even for a visit! Visiting the places i have lived before felt like as if i was visiting my old self, my ex-life really. Oddly it wasn't people in my past, who reminded me the memories; it was the city itself the buildings, streets, smells, nature, beautiful sky... It almost felt like bits and pieces of my old habits emerged. And the comparing, oh dear!... Comparing the streets with the places you have seen, comparing habits, comparing people, comparing this and that... And finally you come to appreciate the things you have experience in the country you have left. City Cycle is what i called the above phenomenon, you love, and appreciate the things you have left behind...
Also, life has changed in the old city. Friends have moved on, some of them got married, most got real jobs, bought houses so on... I came to realize how different my path have been. One very sad thing people are being more and more money oriented as they grow old. and i would say being a PhD student is great if you don't want to be that kind of person. As it requires loads of dedication most of the time and gives back very little until graduation.
The environment you choose to live in does effect your personality... pick what you wanna be then pick the place that suits your goals. i understand choices might be limited but do your best!
